Star Wars Day 2020: Fashion News and a Shoot From The Vaults at Vogue

Yesterday was May 4th, today is Revenge of The Fifth! Although all of us celebrated Star Wars Day a little differently this year, there have still been a few announcements of new fashion products on offer. Vogue Magazine also took us back in time to a shoot from 1999 with Queen Amidala’s stunning wardrobe!

There haven’t been that many new Star Wars announcements in the fashion world this year for Star Wars day. Lucasfilm have been focusing mainly on their new Disney+ content (Disney Galleries looks very promising and right up my street!) and with no major films coming out, it’s been quieter than usual for Star Wars fashion.

New Arrivals

We weren’t sure whether we’d be seeing much more of a team up between Lucasfilm and Po-Zu after the Rise of Skywalker, but it turns out they had at least one more trick up their sleeve! This new style called REBELLION was announced this morning and “features the Rebel Alliance emblem, the one that appears in helmets of X-Wing pilots and Resistance Fighter’s uniforms.” You can pre-order this hi-top sneaker for £69 in red or black, sizes 36-41, with product hopefully arriving (depending on everything happening right now) around mid-June. It’s not my favourite design in the Lucasfilm x Po-Zu collection, but it’s definitely a good one and nice to see that the ending of the Skywalker Saga didn’t mean the end of Star Wars designs from Po-Zu!

RockLove is an amazing jewellery company who have done countless collaborations with Disney, so of course we were hoping for something this May 4th! Our intergalactic prayers have been answered and RockLove have released a stunning new pair of earrings in the shape of BABY YODA! (Yes, yes, not the real name, but we’re so excited for these). The Child with it’s cute little face and outstretched hand have been carved from sterling silver, with glossy hand painted black enamel eyes. To have a little baby Yoda dangling from each of your ears will set you back $85, but we think they’re worth it. For those of you without holes in your ears, there’s a necklace available too, priced at $135.

More accessories now and Star Wars Pop! by Loungefly announced a couple of new designs for May 4th. They include what a new Darth Vader crossbody bag as well as an Ewok crossbody bag with matching coin purse. Sadly, we think that’s all that’s new from Loungefly this year. Hopefully they’ll be back with more designs next year!

A Blast From The Past

Not so much news as it happened over 20 years ago now, but Vogue published a Star Wars piece yesterday, focussing on a particular shoot done way back in 1999. The snaps, photographed by Irving Penn for Vogue, back in April 1999, feature model Audrey Marnay wearing a few of Queen Amidala’s stunning costumes, giving off a very different vibe to the one that Natalie Portman did in the films. The wardrobe that costume designer Trisha Biggar created for Padmé is perhaps one of the most famous ever and instantly recognisable. Beautiful and fragile chiffon and organza petals of her final parade costume juxtaposed against the heavier, more structured silks and velvets of the Throne Room and Travel costumes reflect all aspects of Queen Amidala‘s personality. The details in all these costumes are breathtaking and Penn’s photos are able to capture that with plain backgrounds and striking poses from Marnay. If you want to see more of these photos of these costumes up close, then there’s no better way to view them (apart from in person) than by finding a copy of Dressing A Galaxy: The Costumes of Star Wars (2005). They do pop up for sale every now and then, but are pretty hard to get a hold of (and can be quite pricey). If you know a few Star Wars fans, chances are one of them will be able to led you a copy.
